All You Need to Know About Mathews Elementary
By Asha Mani
My name is Asha Mani and I go to Mathews Elementary.
Mathews is 92 years old, and some of the teachers have been here for more than 30 years! One of the cool things about Mathews is that there are kids from all over the world and from all different types of backgrounds.
There are fun classes both before and after school. Before school you can learn Spanish, French, Chinese, and German. After school there are even more fun things like choir, art club, theater arts, and fairytale theater.
One of my favorite things is the International Festival. This celebrates the countries the students are from. First, there is the parade of nations. One kid gets picked for each country. You wear something from that country, hold that country’s flag up, and said something about it. Then each grade does a different dance from a different culture.
One of the other fun events is Octoberama which is also used to raise money for our school. Each class manages a different booth where you can play different games. There is also a silent auction in the gym.
Mathews is so close to downtown that you can see the state capital from one of the upstairs windows! Sometimes, after a field trip we walk down to the capital lawn to have lunch there. We also go to the Austin Museum of Art for field trips with our art teacher a lot.
I really like Mathews Elementary and am glad I go to school there.
