My Class Field Trip to the Austin Museum of Art with Lunch on the State Capitol Grounds

By Solana Oliver

My class took a field trip to The Austin Museum of Art. We went with one other class.

When we got there, they spilt my class in half to go to different sections of the museum. After our time to look at the paintings was over, the groups switched. Next, we went to the Family Lab.

The person who helped us in the Family Lab was Lucy.

She let us play with the typewriter. I made a snake with connecting blocks. My friend helped me make it. When our time in that center was over, we had to switch centers and then we got to make self-portraits. I made a self-portrait and a picture of my teacher.

We had a fun time but the fun time wasn’t over yet. We got to eat on the lawn of the State Capitol, which was down the street from the museum. We saw a squirrel and it ate some of my classmate’s lunch. It was funny.

When we were done eating, the boys were racing each other as they rolled down the hill. The girls raced each other down the hill and whoever won the most races would race the boy who won the most races. My friend won the race out of the girls.

On the way back, we all had to sit with somebody on the bus. I sat with my best friend. We had a great time. We brought back some pictures and some good memories.

Having Family Over After the Hurricane

When Hurricane Ike came and my family from Beaumont, TX came to my house, things got a little crazy. We had to clean the house until it sparkled. By the time the first person arrived, we were close to done and I was putting up a list of rules. After the hubbub, we had a dinner of chicken tenders and fried chicken that my aunt Carla bought at Wal-Mart. When everyone was done having fun, we got ready for bed. Of course my brother and I had to go to bed first, because of school.

When we got home from school the next day, my brother and I did our homework. After our home work was done, we played with the little babies. Day after day, we would do the same thing until school was out on Friday. On Saturday, my cousin Paul left with his mom and his wife Jennifer and their kids, Jasmine and Brianna.

We went to my brother’s soccer game that Saturday. After the game, we dropped off my brother and dad. My brother was going to ref a soccer game and my dad was going to watch my brother ref. Every body else but my Grandma went with us to drop off one of my brother’s soccer friends at his house.

When we got back home, my cousin, my brother, and I had a light saber fight. I was the host and they were the people who would fight. When I did something wrong they would kill me with their light sabers. On Sunday, we went to a St. Edward’s soccer game because Cris had to be a ball boy. The final score was 1 to 0. They had to go to golden goal overtime, which is when the first team to score wins. With 3 minutes left St.Edward’s won!!!

That is what it was like for me to have my family at my house the week after Hurricane Ike.

The Things We Do at Mathews Elementary.

My name is Solana and I go to Mathews Elementary. We do all sorts of things at Mathews.

We have Octoberama, which is a fundraising night. We also have yoga and Spanish classes. In the morning you can have breakfast. Each morning we have a different special, and the specials are P.E., music, and art.

In my class, we are going to do a role play election where we will go through the steps of the election process. My teacher said that we will get to write speeches, have platforms, make campaign headquarters, and each political party will have a crew that will help with the planning of the events and the speeches.

We do wacky story starters in our composition books, like what happens after a wizard pushes a red button. We also do special compositions, like writing about special places and people.

In the afternoon, we have lunch. The lunches are very good. We get food that was made that day. After lunch, we have recess and then our teachers pick us up and they take us to the other playground. The other playground has two sets of swings. Some of the girls do a thing on the swings where the two people connect their legs and someone pushes them. Then, another person pushes one of the connected people so one person is higher than the other.

Come back often and I'll tell you more about our school and things to do in my town.
