Tell Your Friends About It! Making a Difference
We live in the age of modern technology. Children spend most of their free time playing video games, watching television, and going on the computer. Old classics, such as reading books, are lost.
With this thought in mind, my parents took my little sister and me to our local library for a story time. I was amazed at how many children checked out the books the librarian read to enjoy at home! Wanting to inspire the children to read, I mustered up all my courage and asked the librarian if I could read a book to the children during the next story time.
The librarian was very surprised. “Well, you can try,” she replied, “and see if you like it or not." She picked a book called Silly Little Goose and instructed me to practice it at home.
Eagerly, I relayed the good news to my parents, who were filled with joy. I practiced every day at home: in front of my little sister, my mirror, and my family; I was so motivated to make a difference.
Finally, the day came where I was supposed to read. Seeing the bright smiles on the children’s faces made the butterflies in my stomach flutter away. I made sure to read loudly and clearly and to ask questions, just like I practiced at home. When I finished reading, a loud wave of applause greeted me. The children all wanted to borrow the book I read. Praise and compliments felt good, but what made me feel better was that I was accomplishing my goal.
After a few times reading, parents started coming up to me to tell me that their children were reading books instead of going on the computer, watching television, and playing video games. This bit of information made me incredibly glad and I always think back to this when I need inspiration.
My first day reading has been just as fun and motivational as the ones now. Children from the story time who go to my school often wave or shout a hello whenever they see me. The feeling of happiness has been so great that I want to spread it to children all over the world.
I know that some children are not as fortunate as me; I have access to libraries and other resources. To solve this problem, I will set up a fund to help build libraries all over the world. Then, I will tell my friends about reading in libraries in their cities. Just like how Mr. Pete Kadens’s effort to help Mr. Troy McCullough was a simple deed that blossomed in to something big, children reading good books starts with this!
What Animal Am I Most Like?
On the KidFriendlyOnline.Net zoo, I would most likely be like the monkey. I love to laugh and have fun. Nothing means more to me than playing funny pranks and laughing about them! Still, I try not to hurt anyone’s feelings and make them cry. If someone’s sad or unhappy, I try my best to cheer them up! Sometimes I don’t use jokes and just try being nice to them for a while. Laughing is the best thing in the world to me, and I try to spread it.
Friends and family are also extremely important. I try to spend time with them as much as I can. Even though my little sis is annoying, I try my best to be nice to her. I believe that my family is very loving and supporting, and always can turn to them when something goes wrong. Swimming has made me hungry for competition, and I always dig a challenge and try new things. I also believe that it is good to look on the positive side of life, and always think the good way. I have a lot of energy when I’m happy. Sometimes I am not patient and lose my temper. My little sister gets scared, and my dad has to give me a talk. I get angry really easily, but I’ve learned how to take a deep breath and control it.
Monkeys are also very clever and smart. Well, I’m not perfect or anything, but sometimes I think of really creative answers and my teachers are really surprised. Sometimes all it takes is a minute of thinking to solve a really weird math problem. I LOVE to do logic problems, and those mind games on the computer are really cool. I also like those games where you have to start your own business and have to manage a lot of things, like money and weather.
Reading is one of my favorite hobbies. My dad gets kind of angry when he tells me to go to bed and I don’t listen because I’m reading a really good book. The Green Glass Sea is one of my favorite books. Actually, I love almost every book I read! It’s really hard to determine my favorite book, but The Green Glass Sea came pretty close to being it. It’s about a girl who comes to live with her father during the making of the atomic bomb in Los Alamos. In an accident, her father dies, and Dewey, the girl, must live with her enemy. The book inspired me so much that the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima became my research topic at school. I have heard that the president has issued the making of more atomic bombs and stronger ones sometime in Livermore. I was so outraged, and I was moved to stop this. Also I feel strongly for global warming and animal rights.
All these reasons and others make up my opinion of me being most like a monkey, personality wise.
