My School - Fred Olds Elementary

My school is Fred A. Olds Elementary. It was opened in 1927 and was first called Raleigh Grammar School. It had seven classes, one for each grade, first through seventh. The staff began a drive to change the name to honor Colonel Fred A. Olds. But who exactly is Fred Olds?

Frederick Augustus Olds liked to tell people he was “A man without a country” saying he was born on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean. He grew up in Hillsborough and Cary, which were then small farming communities. As a young man he served in the State Guard. One day some one told him to clean out what they thought was junk. It turned out to be an assortment of historical records stretching back to colonial times. For forty years he collected things connected to North Carolina’s past. He traveled all over the state, meeting people and writing their stories until he was 75.

Now you know who Fred Olds is. Students have been coming here to my school now for eighty years. Wouldn’t Col. Fred Olds be proud!

The Animal I Am Most Like...

An animal that I am most like is a monkey. We have a lot in common. We are both very silly, but at the same time, smart. We love to play with our friends, climb on walls and swing on trees.

Monkeys love to eat lots of fruit, and so do I. This is pretty much all I eat. I think it would be fun to live in a zoo just like a monkey. That is one animal I am most like.
